Table Tennis
By now we are finished with our 1st World Deaf Table Tennis Championships that went well in Sofia, Bulgaria, with 130 athletes from 27 Countries. Thanks to the Bulgarian Deaf Sports Federation for hosting this event.
As a matter of curiosity, the eldest of the athletes in this competition was Mr HSIA, Jaw-hua (age of 60) from Chinese Taipei who won a gold medal in teams’ competition.
The Whiz kid, Eva JURKOVA, from Slovakia (age of 13), met her match in the women’s single when the Chinese SHI, Ce (Deaflympics and World Champion), defeated her. Miss Jurkova appears to have a bright future in table tennis!
The Women’s singles ranked among the best. There were 4 Chinese and 4 Japanese athletes making point-blank transparency, showing the strength of their region.
The most successful athlete among the women was SHI, Ce (CHN), with 3 gold and 1 silver medal.
The most successful athlete among the men was WEN, Chih-hsuan (TPE) with 2 gold and 1 silver medal.
Out of a total of 27 countries, only 5 gathered medals. Gold medals went to China (4) and Chinese Taipei (2). From Europe only Ukraine qualified. See the data as shown below.
