ICSD President, Dr. Valery Rukhledev, delivered a speech at the 54th session of the Commission for Social Development at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. This session concluded the Commission’s 2015-2016 review and policy cycle under the priority theme “Rethinking and Strengthening Social Development in the Contemporary World.”

The Implementation of the 2030 agenda in the light of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was an important part of the Commission. It assembled a multi-stakeholder panel discussion to discuss the recent progress of the disability-inclusion in the 2030 Global Agenda for Sustainable Development.
 
The multi-stakeholder discussion explored on how existing UN institutional frameworks can contribute to strengthening the mainstreaming of disability and enhancing awareness and improving cooperation to the advancement of the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in line with the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. They also discussed on the possibility of investigating further into the modalities of establishing a new monitoring mechanism of disability for the Commission for Social Development.

This Commission for Social Development was an important one, as it was the first session after the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Dr. Valery Rukhledev expressed his gratitude to the UN for the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. He stressed on the Convention’s critical role in improving the lifestyle of the deaf community worldwide. He also vowed to continue strengthening the collaboration for deaf persons in areas such as employment, education, sports and arts.
